"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God."
Matthew 5:8 (NKJV)
I like the New Testament words found in Matthew 5:8. They help me ponder the things of God in the deepest way I know how. They are some of my favorite.
To ponder that God allows me to see him in the people who make up my small corner of the world is grand. When I sense God in this way, I'm at peace.
The challenge, though, is in keeping a pure heart.
Pride--the bad kind--not the good kind, slips into my attitude in subtle ways. My motives then become self-seeking. Being sensitive to the needs of others is most difficult when I'm determined that I know best. I am fond of things going my way. I’m not sure what that is called, actually . . . arrogance, maybe. Whatever it is, it’s not pretty much less pure, or the least bit helpful to anyone.
The words in Psalm 51:10 come to mind: "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me." (KJV)
These must be my favorite Old Testament words; I sure pray them a lot. My need for God certainly increases. How grateful I am to know the one who not only forgives my sin so that I may see him in heaven some day, but also cleanses my heart day by day--minute by minute so that I may see him in the present moment; especially in those whom I hold so dear.
